More and more adult clients arrive at psychologist's offices suffering from stress and an inability to concentrate that makes them worry that they may have ADD. Often they are just overstimulated and overwhelmed. Stress is what we experience when the world moves too fast, when there is too much to do and too little time to do it. We feel stressed when the emotional world around us is strained or endangered. Through emotional contagion we feel stressed when others around us are stressed.

This article is about how one person began to use his different learning strategy (often labeled "learning disability") to his advantage, unconsciously.  He had been working to clear his stress around learning so that he could use his natural intelligence in a way that was right for him. But unconsciously he was also hanging on to it [ADD/ADHD] because it protected him from failing. Eventually the inner conflict developed into sabotage, and when it began to get in his way, he sought help.

Although ADHD is still classified a disorder because of the challenges individual's face with it, I'm more convinced everyday that it is a way of thinking and processing the world that is so beneficial to humanity, we must turn our attention to it.

Stimulants are often effective in treating many of the symptoms of ADD -- but are they the best ADD treatment for your child?

    ADHD and Diet

While there is not overwhelming conclusive evidence that any particular food will cause or prevent hyperactivity, a well-balanced diet that is rich in a variety of brain-healthy foods will benefit anyone, and some preliminary studies have found certain food types to have a positive effect on children with ADHD.

Along with the increased prescription of stimulant drugs for children has come a heightened awareness of the risks these medications can pose, and more and more parents are searching for natural alternatives.

Although it is commonly believed to be a condition that primarily affects children, it is estimated that 12 to 15 million American adults also suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

As parents become disillusioned with prescription ADD medications or simply decide to try natural alternatives first, more and more are turning to natural ADD supplements.

"The larger world does not connect ADD with giftedness at all," Tolan notes. "Occasionally they mention creativity. And ADD is now the current 'in' thing to be as an adult, as well..."

According to a number of sites, such as LifeTips, prominent successful people who show the trademark signs of ADHD include Ansel Adams, Anne Bancroft, Beethoven, Hans Christian Anderson, Lewis Carroll, Leonardo da Vinci, Walt Disney, Cher, Thomas Edison, John F. Kennedy, Robin Williams, Henry Winkler, Stevie Wonder, and many others.
